Taxes for a Good Cause!
The Shadow

Let me take another shot at this tax thing then Bill or whoever can jump in and correct me or add what they know!!

"It does appear that the people that were all for this over estimated how many people knew what was going on or even interested enough to seek out information."

Yes it is a tax on anything that has a tax on it already. Everyone [I think Colorado people also] would pay the tax. Once the money was collected for the project that was selected for each town the tax would stop. The money can only be used for the project stated in the application each town submitted so the ruling party could not use it on some other pet project.

I will send my spies out to seek information on the projects for the other towns but here in Glendo they want to tear down the building that houses the ambulance at the present time and build a new building that would house the ambulance, our fire trucks and the rural fire truck along with meeting rooms or what ever storage that would be needed. I think that there was also some money added to make up the balance of the sewer project but Bill or someone will have to confirm that.

I heard the project for Guernsey was a new swimming pool; Wheatland wanted to over haul the fire house & Chugwater was doing street work. Those are all hearsay on my part but I will attempt to confirm that. Anyone with any information or ideas please jump in.

Wheatland Native:
Thanks Bill. That's helpful information all around. It would be nice to see councilmen from Wheatland and Guernsey step up to the plate as you have done, and talk to the people here. Who would be able to make that happen? I know the councilmen in Wheatland, who they are, and if any step up here to talk about the tax and give their opinion, they will have my vote next time around. I don't know the councilmen in Guernsey. Please speak up.

Bill Krist:
Sorry I have not been able to get on Wheaterville.com,  The storm wiped out my ISP and it has just starting to work again.
The figures are correct for each town's project.
If we voters pass the 1% sales tax, it will not effect your fuel tax, not effect your food costs (there is no sales tax on groceries in Wyoming, YAY!), and property taxes will not be affected.
Every time we go to Home Depot or Walmart in Cheyenne, we pay their 1% sales tax and help them build new facilities.  When the folks from Nebraska, Colorado, and Cheyenne come up to use Glendo and Guernsey State Parks, why not let them help Platte County build some needed things?
I will research all the other town's projects and let you know what I have learned.  On Glendo's project, The $150,000 for the sewer is to make up for what we will be short to finish the sewer.  The $600,000 for the Fire Hall, Ambulance and Rural Fire Hall will not be close to covering the total cost but will get us started to the point where we can get financial help from the Feds, State, and other grants.
I know this is tough times, almost $4/gal for gas and I'm glad I didn't buy a diesel pickup!  It is hard to vote for more taxes when it costs almost $100 to fill your tank.
Give it some thought and look at each project.  It is up to each town to let you know what you are voting for.
I will return to Wheaterville.com with more info, unless it rains 4 inches in 24 hours and it shuts Vistabeam down again.  Thanks,  Bill Krist

The Shadow:
It would seem that the good people of Guernsey have some work to do to convince the people why they should vote for this new pool. It does seem like a lot of money but in this day and age who knows?
Yes Glendo did get some money for the sewer project but they drug their feet for so long the cost went up and they don't have enought to finish. The fact is that they haven't even begun and they told us it would be finished last Nov. Go figure!!

A Neighbor:
Those are revealing percentages. How can a swimming pool for Geurnsey cost more than sewers and streets combined? It must be someones relative that's set up to get the bid for the pool I bet, or maybe it is Haliburton, that's a good one. Shadow, how much does it cost to build a pool for a small town community? And didn't Glendo already get money to fix their sewers? If they didn't fix them then why whould they if they got more money?

Skeptic:
A pool that costs 2,000,000 bucks is either going to be made of gold or built by Haliburton. That thing about "and costs associated with the building of the pool" sounds pretty fishy. Eric Jones isn't the town attorney for Geurnsey is he? The Guernsey Pool will probably kill this whole capital one tax idea because no one is going to believe that a pool costs that much. That's more than Wheatland's whole fire station.

The Shadow:
It would seem we have enought information to begin commenting on the project. Get your friends involved and post your questions here for the ruling party about why they feel the need for their project. If they can't defend it they probably don't need  it.
I did write to WADCO and they said they were putting an information pachage together. Let's see if they have any more info for us.

Agreed:

Different towns, differnet priorities:
Lessee.... roughly 1/3 goes to the Wheatland firefighters for a gym and a garage,  12% to Chugwater for asphalt, Guernsey's gonna swim with 37%, Hartville fire trucks get 9% (), Glendo's 13% gets a building and a sewer? Them Guernseyites got thier priorities straight!

• $1,500,000 to the County of Platte and Town of Wheatland for a fire hall facility including four truck parking bays, office, exercise room and conference room.

• $650,000 to the Town of Chugwater for reconstruction of streets

• $150,000 to the Town of Glendo for a sanitary sewer main replacement and $600,000 for an emergency services building

• $2,000,000 to the Town of Guernsey for a swimming pool and construction associated with the swimming pool

• $500,000 to the Town of Hartville for the renovation of public buildings, complete fire hall expansion, provide operations and maintenance for public buildings, and design and construct access and extend town services to new home sites.

Dani's Mom:
There are a lot of people who don't get the Record Times. I have one friend who does and that's it. Most people read The Merchant and Wheaterville.com, so putting the information in those places gets the word out alot better to more people. This link will help.
As for the tax, I don't want any more taxes but I'll see what this is about before I make up my mind for voting on it.

question:
Can Wheaterville please print the official projects that each town is looking at? That would help us know if we should vote for the tax. Also, how much of a tax is it? If this info is somewhere else I don't know where and it seems like we should all know it, without going to commissioner meetings or council meetings that most of us don't have time to go to. Thanks.
